I wrote this song to remember my Mom: “He Called Her Mother”

My Mom passed away during Holy Week of 2024. It’s hard for words to express all the things that you feel when you lose someone who is that special to you. I didn’t realize how healing it was going to be to write this song about her.

I put most of it together during breakfast and then fine-tuned it later in the day. It basically tells a true story starting from my very first memory which was waking up in my crib and then seeing my Mom come in the room with a huge smile on her face and outstretched arms to come and get me.

The first part of the lyrics are perhaps a little cliche but I left them like that because they are something a child would probably write and contrast with the last part of the chorus which comes from a deeper place.

I wanted the symbolism of the dove in there because of the connections to Heavenly Mother.

Other parts of the song are deeply personal and the part about her passing is true to memory. The song actually changes from 3rd person to 1st person at that point which was intentional. When I wrote it I was thinking of the past, present, and future and the song is a nod to that.

I’m sharing this song in case anyone else has lost a Mother and knows the feeling. She was a beautiful person and I owe more to her than I could ever express. You can get the song on Spotify, Apple and almost any music platform out there.

Oh and the cover art is from a real photo.

Lyrics

He opened his eyes
In a room full of light

And he looked around
Not a soul to be found

Then she opened the door
With a beautiful smile

And reached out

Like an angel
Maybe sent from above
She lifted his soul
Like the wings of a dove
God made a gift
That is unlike any other
And he called her Mother

She guided his steps
Taught him how to read
His faith began to grow
She planted that seed

When he turned to look
She was always there
The love in her eyes
The gold of her hair

Like an angel
Maybe sent from above
She lifted his soul
Like the wings of a dove
God made a gift
That is unlike any other
And he called her Mother

When the darkness closed in
And hope burned out
He couldn’t see the way
And embraced his doubt

Until a thought one night
A memory he found.

Of an angel
Who was sent from above.
She lifted his soul
Like the wings of a dove
God made a gift
That is unlike any other
And he called her Mother

By her bed now
Her breathing slowly fades
I hold her hand in mine
Just one last time

And then she’s gone

Now she’s an angel
Looking down from above
She lifts my soul
Like the wings of a dove
God thank you for the gift
Who was unlike any other
I called her Mother

And then one day
My eyes will open wide
In that place full of light

As I look around
And she’ll reach out
With a beautiful smile

Like an angel

I’m so touched by this sweet loving song 🎶 honoring your beautiful mother. She was/is a beautiful spirit who honored her role as mother and daughter. As my daughter she lived an exemplary life as such. Her last act of love, kindness, and service, was taking my hand on a very cold day wrapped her own warm hand and wrapped it around mine to warm it. I have that act of love embedded in my heart. 😢 I cannot play this memory without tearing up as I feel a sweet ache in my soul followed by the wonderful thought that I KNOW I will see her again and Grandpa and it will be for eternity. 🙏👼🙏

It’s an incredible blessing to know God’s plan and understand how it has been lovingly designed to ensure that the most important things in life, our loved ones, are never lost to us.
