There is a lot of evil in this world from low to high places and it is enough to cause great concern for many. However, the only ones that should fear are those workers of darkness who refuse to change their ways.
For behold, there is a curse upon all this land, that destruction shall come upon all those workers of darkness, according to the power of God, when they are fully ripe; therefore I desire that this people might not be destroyed.
Alma 37:28
Just so we don’t gloss over this point, Alma repeats himself.
Yea, and cursed be the land forever and ever unto those workers of darkness and secret combinations, even unto destruction, except they repent before they are fully ripe.
(vs.31)
Alma 37 is full of doctrinal richness and contrast in terms of wickedness and righteousness.
Alma warns not to be slothful because of the “easiness of the way.” The word of Christ is easy and sometimes we might perceive the complexities of the world as too much of a match for simple teachings.
Alma’s words fill us with hope. There is so much going on in this world, too much to know, so much hidden evil, and the feeling that things are only going to get darker; but we have the word of Christ:
For behold, it is as easy to give heed to the word of Christ, which will point to you a straight course to eternal bliss, as it was for our fathers to give heed to this compass, which would point unto them a straight course to the promised land.
And now I say, is there not a type in this thing? For just as surely as this director did bring our fathers, by following its course, to the promised land, shall the words of Christ, if we follow their course, carry us beyond this vale of sorrow into a far better land of promise.
(vs.44-45)
I’ve written in more detail about Alma’s words concerning the Liahona here and here.
God is moving in this world, as he always has. He will fulfill all of his promises with power and wonder. If we give heed to the word of Christ, we have absolutely nothing to fear.
